This was the first time we had taken my girlfriends 3-year-old son, Bray, hunting with us and boy what a first hunt it was for him!
We were settled on the edge of a big wheat field by about 3:30 that afternoon. At around 4 I had been playing around with this new deer call app on my phone which sounds surprisingly good, and Steph looks at me and says “I swear I hear a deer grunting behind us..It sounds just like that noise on our phone”. A couple minutes later, I heard it as well and at this point, the deer was only 40-50 yards behind us. I used an estrus bleat in combo with some tending grunts and it wasn’t 2 minutes later he popped out in the field. As he fed out into the field, I helped Steph get her gun up to where she would be able to shoot. I whistled at him once to stop him and she took care of the rest! A well placed 60 yard shot with a Rossi single shot .243 dropped the 140lbs 6 point in his tracks. I couldn’t be more excited for her; I was just as jacked up that night as I would have been if I’d killed a freak! |
