Ever since I can remember I was always intrigued by guns; it didn’t matter if it was a shotgun, rifle, or pistol. They were loud and shiny…right up a young tomboys alley! My older sister on the other hand was the complete opposite of me. She would rather play make over with her Barbie dolls than outside with me shooting Pepsi cans (or whatever else I could find). We’ve been polar opposites since I can remember. The total girly girl, Krista enjoyed make up, hated bugs, and never cared much for hunting or guns. I lived for making mud pies out in the yard, catching frogs, and just being out in the woods. Of course the vast differences in our interests and hobbies brewed fighting…lots of fighting! As we’ve gotten older we have become more willing to understand each others interests more. To my surprise, my girly older sister had been interested in shooting some of my guns all along, she was only too scared. She is now my favorite shooting partner and a great shot too!

It all began on one particular weekend getaway to the beautiful NC mountains. I decided to bring a few of my guns to shoot. As I set up my target some of the family gathered around to watch. By the end of the day there was a gun in the hands of all of the Helms girls in the family! Once they realized that there was nothing to fear about guns if used safely, they were very interested in learning more about them! I was SO excited to be able to enjoy something I love as much as shooting with my mom and sister!

We now enjoy a weekly visit to the local shooting range to practice and rent new guns to try out. We encourage our friends to come out and shoot with us, it’s always awesome to see other women showing an interest in the sport! It may seem silly to some but shooting guns together and being able to teach my sister all I know about them has brought us closer. Time spent at the range together is priceless and is the highlight of our week! Now she is wanting to learn how to shoot my compound bow! I’ll save that story for another week…
